A singer whose fame is dwindling, Azam returns to the hometown that he was so eager to flee three decades ago. There, he reunites with his childhood best friends, Ali and his wife Minah. Overjoyed to meet their long-lost friend, they invite Azam out for a nighttime fishing trip and a picnic on an uninhabited island. After hours of chatting about love, telling each other old village folktales and tiptoeing around the reasons for Azam’s long absence, they end the night with a game where each attempts to hold their breath underwater for three minutes. But Azam never reemerges. A chimerical blend of realism and mysticism, Year Without a Summer is a hypnotic experience that is at turns tranquil and unnerving, a film immersed in the deep rhythms of the sea.

About SEA of Sadness
2- 28 Aug | Oldham Theatre

With more than 20 years’ experience working on Southeast Asian cinema as a senior programmer at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Gertjan Zuilhof has developed close relationships with many of the region’s filmmakers and affinities with their works. The SEA of Sadness programme is a culmination of his curatorial experience. Previously presented at the 2018 edition of the Taiwan International Documentary Festival, the programme is now being presented for the first time in Southeast Asia at the Asian Film Archive.

The films selected for the programme include classic masterpieces as well as contemporary work from promising young directors; both feature-length films and shorts; and works of all genres, ranging from “pure” documentary to fiction films and experimental videos. These films represent the high quality of original work produced in Southeast Asia over the last two decades.

The sadness indicated in the title of the programme does not mean only that the films are concerned with sadness as an emotion, but also that they are sensitive, personal, and made with genuine feeling, delving deep into the memories and hopes of the people in the countries they were made in.
